Serinus was named after one of the first alarm systems in history: canary birds. In Latin it is called “Serinus Canaria forma domestica”. In underground mining, they were supposed to warn against carbon monoxide leakage. If the birds stopped singing, the miners would immediately leave the mining gallery. The canary is thus more than just a logo and an eponym.
